Not many people can say they’ve seen a whale shark in person in the open sea. Well from now to April, you can get right up close with these magnificent fish in the gorgeous Maldives. Bragging rights!
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean and anyone is lucky if they get to see these elusive creatures in the sea. (Keep in mind that whales are not fish, they’re mammals and nurse their young). And despite being sharks that are the size of whales, the whale shark is a gentle giant and poses no danger to humans (so humans should do the unto them and likewise treat them with respect and kindness).
These big fish are extremely elusive, say the good folk at COMO Maalifushi. We don’t know where the breed, give birth, or spend their early years and very few females or mature whale sharks are ever seen. To date, only one pregnant female has ever been studied by scientists.
When night falls in the Maldives, fishermen take their boats out and turn on their lights, drawing swarms of plankton, which in turn attracts the enormous whale shark. These gentle giants float vertically under the boats for hours, feeding on the plankton with their mouths wide open.
These great big whale sharks are so peaceful that snorkelers can swim beside them during this feeding time. You can even get up close enough that you can see their distinct spots and stripes. Every whale shark has a pattern as unique as human fingerprints.
For guests of COMO Maalifushi, the resort boat takes you to find the mysterious, gigantic whale sharks, where you can choose to swim with them in the water or simply watch them from the boat. The Maldives’ incredible crystal clear waters gives you perfect views the ethereal experience beneath.
There’s also loads of other unforgettable aquatic adventures you can have at COMO Maalifushi – a dolphin viewing cruise, sailing lessons, kayaking tour, turtle expedition, windsurfing lessons, diving lessons, and more.
Price for whale shark adventure: US$250 per person (snorkelling), or US$150 per person (observing)
